AMENABILITY TO VIRUSES OF CHILDREN RESIDING IN COLLECTIVES

Any inclusion in the collective implies exposure to infections that cause episodes of colds, gastroenteritis (stomach viruses), conjunctivitis, pharyngitis, etc., which may be a normal occurrence, since children are constantly in contact with a large number of children, some of whom have colds, some are in the incubation period, and some of them are just carriers without any health issues.

In addition, separation from parents is stressful for every child. As in adults, so in children, long-term stress affects the weakening of immunity. During this period, children begin to develop an immune system that will slowly achieve a satisfactory defense. The younger are the children, the lower is their ability to defend themselves. In the first 4-5 years of life, it is normal for a child to go through 6 to as many as 8 “infectious” episodes a year. Children often get sick because their immunity is developing and it needs to be strengthened. The upper respiratory tract includes a triangle that forms the nose, throat and sinuses, and many germs enter that part because they are in contact with the outside world. During the winter, complications in this area are more common, because the natural defense system is weaker at that time of year.

Frequent viral infections in collectives occur due to:

  • Age – the younger the child, the more immature his/her immune system is, and thus they are more susceptible to infections.
  • Great physical closeness among children.
  • Frequent use of contaminated objects such as toys, instruments, etc.
  • Insufficient ventilation and mostly small living areas – respiratory droplets continuously float through the room.

How to prevent infection spreading?

  • Wash your hands even after coughing, sneezing or wiping your nose.
  • Proper nutrition is of great importance, so that the body can strengthen the immune system.
  • Maintaining good body hydration.
  • If the child is sick, do not force him/her to eat if they do not want to.
  • Avoid, if possible, excessively long indoor staying (especially in places where there are many people).
  • Children should be dressed in accordance with the temperature ((they should not be dressed too lightly if it is cold, but, also not overdressed if it is hot).
