MECHANISM OF ACTION
GABA and 5-HTP: ideal pair for a healthy Nervous System
GABA (Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid) is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the nervous system [1], i.e. a substance that transmits nerve impulses from one nerve cell to another. It is essential for brain metabolism, ensures the normal functioning of the brain and thus reduces the consequences of aging and stress. GABA, through its receptors, has a calming effect on our nervous system, reduces increased muscle tone, while in larger quantities it stimulates sleep. Studies have shown special importance in states of anxiety, i.e. anxiety and stress, as well as in difficulty falling asleep and maintaining sleep phases.
How important GABA is in neurotransmission is shown by the fact that every third synapse in the brain uses GABA as a neurotransmitter [2]. It is found in higher concentrations in the body in the hypothalamus, which regulates sleep cycles, body temperature and hipophysis activity. It has a stimulating effect on the pituitary gland and the secretion of growth hormone – a hormone responsible for growth in children and for muscle synthesis and catabolic processes (lipolysis) in adults. Thus, in smaller quantities (1 capsule a day of Calmid) it has a beneficial effect on people who have problems with increased body weight, to reduce stress, as well as athletes to reduce fat deposits and increase muscle mass. Regular supplementation with a larger amount of GABA (2 capsules a day of Calmid) is recommended for anxious people, people with insomnia, cramps and muscle tension.
Extract of Griffonia simplicifolia contains 5-HTP (5-hydroxy tryptophan) which is converted in the brain to the neurotransmitter serotonin (“happiness hormone”), which significantly affects the function of the nervous system by improving mood, reducing hunger, promoting sleep [3], and has a beneficial effect on weight loss and pain relief, such as fibromyalgia and migraine. In addition, serotonin is important for many processes in the body, such as pain control, inflammatory processes, intestinal peristalsis, etc.
Griffonia simplicifolia is an African plant and represents the optimal source of 5-HTP [4]. Its seeds contain 20% of 5-HTP, while its extract can contain up to 99% of 5-HTP. Therapeutically, 5-HTP is mostly used in the treatment of depressive manifestations and pain syndromes (fibromyalgia, muscle pain, migraine headaches) in smaller quantities (Calmid -1 capsule per day), while in higher concentrations it is used in the treatment of insomnia (2 capsules per day of Calmid). Caution should be exercised when co-administered with antidepressants
Zinc and vitamin B6: ideal support for a healthy Nervous System
Zinc is an essential mineral, a microelement, involved in numerous processes in the body, such as regulating growth and development and maintaining homeostasis of the nervous and immune systems [5]. Its highest concentration is in bones, teeth, hair, skin, liver, muscles, leukocytes and testes (testicles). In addition, in the Central Nervous System (CNS), zinc interacts significantly with neurotransmitter systems. Physiologically, zinc is a cofactor of enzymatic reactions important for the proper metabolism of proteins and all other building blocks. In reference studies, zinc has been shown to affect cytokine synthesis and exert an immune-stimulatory and antioxidant effect [6]. In the Central Nervous System, it binds to GABA receptors and exerts anxiolytic effects.
Zinc shows numerous beneficial biological effects and contributes to normal immune function, protects cells from oxidative stress, contributes to normal metabolism of macronutrients, vitamin A, normal protein synthesis, normal cognitive functioning, maintaining the integrity of skin, hair and nails, maintaining visual function, normal fertility and reproduction, and maintenance of normal testosterone levels in the blood. Thus, zinc supports a wide range of vital physiological functions and is an ideal support for neurotransmitter balance in the brain. The recommended daily intake for zinc for adults is 10 mg and is provided by using 2 capsules of Calmid daily.
Vitamin B6 belongs to the group of water-soluble vitamins and occurs in the body in several forms that harmonize mental functions and the proper functioning of the nervous and immune systems. Vitamin B6 acts as a coenzyme in various chemical reactions related to amino acid metabolism and is important for maintaining energy metabolism and regulating hormonal activity, which has a beneficial effect on stress, fatigue and exhaustion. In addition, it acts as a natural diuretic, contributes to the prevention of various nervous and skin disorders, relieves night cramps and some forms of neuropathy, and shows neuroprotective effects. Together with zinc, it represents a significant support to the neurotransmitter balance in the brain [7]. The recommended daily intake for vitamin B6 for adults is 1.4 mg and is provided by taking 2 capsules of Calmid daily.
