IRON DEFICIENCY IN PERSONS WITH CELIAC DISEASE

Celiac disease is a chronic hereditary autoimmune disease characterized by intolerance to gluten (wheat, rye and barley proteins), i.e. whose intake leads to significant damage to the small intestinal mucosa. Almost all symptoms develop due to impaired absorption of nutrients in the intestines. These substances are necessary for a person to develop and function properly, and in Celiac disease, the organism is not able to provide a sufficient amount through absorption in the small intestine. One of those important substances that is in short supply is iron, whose importance for our body is already known.

This disease is very common, almost 30% of the population is a carrier of genes necessary for the development of the disease, and 1% have developed the disease, there are even more cases than the data show because a large number of people do not show signs of the disease. It affects women more often: the ratio of women to men is 2: 1. Celiac disease can manifest at any age

Symptoms appear after the first exposure to the trigger of this disease, which is gluten. In children, there are several signs, diarrhea, weight loss, general weakness, pale skin and visible mucous membranes due to anemia. There is also vomiting, discomfort and pain in the abdomen, stunted growth, possible delay of puberty and the appearance of swelling.

The clinical picture in adults is characterized by general weakness, hair loss, enamel disorders, anemia, allergies, joint inflammation, osteoporosis and fertility problems. Neurological disorders such as epilepsy, brain calcifications, ataxia, myopathy, peripheral neuropathy are also common.

Complications of celiac disease are malignant diseases, in the first place malignant lymphoma of the small intestine.

With this disease, there is no cure, but action to prevent the appearance of these symptoms, a gluten-free diet that must be followed for life. It is a diet without wheat, rye and barley. If the patient does not follow a complete gluten-free diet, the risk of developing health complications and risk of malignant diseases increases. Replenishment of nutrients is necessary because the body is not able to provide a sufficient amount on its own due to poor absorption.
