WHAT ARE SUPPLEMENTS AND WHAT ARE THEY USED FOR?

Dietary supplements are preparations that supplement the normal diet and represent concentrated sources of nutrients (vitamins, minerals and other substances with nutritional or physiological effect), that may be used individually or in some combination, and as such they are in pharmaceutical forms that allow easy individual dosing (as capsules, tablets, drops, etc.).

They are not used as conventional food, and they cannot replace individual meals. They are intended for people who have increased needs or reduced intake of certain nutrients, or people who need to achieve a certain physiological effect through controlled supplementation of daily diet. Dietary supplements are not medicines, but natural substances in them are in higher concentrations than they may be found in food. Consuming a variety of healthy food is the best way to get the nutrients you need. However, some people do not get enough vitamins and minerals from their daily diet, so doctors may recommend a supplement. Nutritional supplements can provide nutrients that may be lacking in your daily diet.
